Description Two con artists posing as tailors convince a clothes-conscious emperor that they can make him an outfit made of material so fine it's invisible.

| Customer Reviews: It took me years to come around to this one, but it's an excellent satire April 20, 2010 Gregory N. Perkins (Frankfort, KY USA) I'll admit it: For years, I was bored to tears by this Faerie Tale Theatre adaptation. I was a child during the run of Faerie Tale Theatre on Showtime, and "The Emperor's New Clothes" does not easily lend itself to a child's appreciation. It has been only recently that I've discovered how subversively satirical this adaptation can be.
With a solid cast led by Dick Shawn, Alan Arkin, and the late Art Carney, it tells the story of a vain clotheshorse emperor who is duped by two conmen into believing that they can make beautiful clothes out of literal thin air. The particular strength of this show is in the contrast between absurd wealth and the average citizenry, and the script does an excellent job of balancing the opposing commentary one makes on the other. Above being a simple political satire, the production makes a broader statement on the extent of human vanity, and the ironic temptation to make oneself a fool rather than be thought to be one.
Also featuring Clive Revill, I've come to realize that Faerie Tale Theatre's "The Emperor's New Clothes" is a very good dry comedy.
fine entry in the series October 8, 2004 Byron Kolln (the corner where Broadway meets Hollywood) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES is an altogether fine entry in the FAERIE TALE THEATRE series.
Alan Arkin and Art Carney stars as the con-artists who fool a vain and ruthless Emperor (Dick Shawn) into believing that they can create the most exquisite of clothes that are invisible to those who are foolish or unworthy. Legendary British songstress Georgia Brown co-stars as a wise innkeeper.
