Product Description
An American diplomat in London falls in love with an actress, but tries to protect himself by saying he is married.

Christian Dior really ought to be considered one of the stars of Indiscreet, director Stanley Donen's consummately glamorous, altogether grown-up love story. The magnificent 1950s "New Look" gowns Dior designed for Ingrid Bergman, herself at the peak of sophistication and loveliness, are a high point of the film's chic, cosmopolitan mise en scène. Bergman plays Anne Kalman, a celebrated actress who's "the envy of everyone who knows her," yet is bored and lonely. Then she meets suave diplomat Philip Adams (Cary Grant), her match in every way: looks, charm, elegance--the works. The electricity is palpable between them and neither makes any attempt to hide that fact. When Anne learns that Philip is an expert on international finance, she's bold enough to crack: "I'm crazy about hard currency."

It's the very maturity of the romance between Anne and Philip that makes this movie so exhilarating, so romantic, and so affecting. When people fall in love at "a certain age" it's much more poignant; much more is at stake. (The film has a truly surprising plot twist, which throws everything into chaos.) The two "sadder but wiser" stars Bergman and Grant had certainly seen their share of love and heartbreak by this time in their lives, and it shows. (Grant was on the third of his five marriages; Bergman's career had already survived the scandal of her adulterous affair with Roberto Rossellini.) It's fascinating to watch them both, knowing what we know of their personal lives: to see Bergman's Anne throw caution to the wind to commit an "indiscretion" with a married man; to observe Grant/Philip's distinct ambivalence about the institution of marriage. It's a case of picture-perfect casting. --Laura Mirsky

5 out of 5 stars Indiscreet is Indescribable!   November 1, 2001

Indiscreet is one of my favorite Cary Grant movies of all time!
Ingrid Bergmand & Cary Grant are at their all time most charming selves in this light-hearted romantic comedy. Bergman, who has shown her talents in suspenseful thrillers such as Notorious, is surprisingly outstanding in comedy! Will Anne (Bergman) who plays a famous stage actress and Phillip (Grant) an international financier get together? In the course of finding out, you will be delighted with the amusing interactions & banter which so accurately characterize men & women in romantic relationships. Ingrid Bergman is stunning and stylish and her apartment is to die for. Grant is debonair and charming as always. The lines in this movie are timeless! A favorite scene includes watching Grant dance with Bergman at a ballroom type function. This is a movie you can watch again & again and love even more each time.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie   May 2, 2001

This is by far the favorite movie of myself and my husband. The movie is charming and witty, just at the peak of Hollywood's glamour. We've seen this movie again and again, and yet we still pick up little things that we've never noticed before that are very funny.

My favorite characters are Margaret and Albert. They are two of the best character actors I've ever seen and steal most of the scenes they are in.

The plot is an interesting twist on the theme of dating over the age of 30. I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A very good and very charming romance comedy   November 29, 2006

If you want to see a light, funny, and witty, romance comedy, you've come to the right film. Bergman is at a beautiful, wiser, and charming 43 and Grant is as handsome as ever. He hardly ever changed did he?
The dialog is swift, clever, timeless, and delivered with ridiculous ease from a well picked cast. Even at the outset, the acting by Bergman and strong support by Phyllis Calvert is sublime and transparent. If you aren't smiling or charmed throughout this movie then check your pulse. Maybe 5 stars is a bit much here but I enjoyed this movie as much as any. It's not a movie that is supposed to make you think or profoundly affect you (unless you are an actor) but simply entertain you. And that it did!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, funny romantic movie   April 30, 2005

Obviously this isn't Citizen Kane. It's a light-hearted romantic comedy that is one of my favorites because Carey and Ingrid are in such a unique situation. I love to see just how crazy love can make us act, how powerful those emotions can be and the lengths we go to win the heart of someone else. The first part of this movie focuses on their budding romance, until Ingrid finds out that Carey isn't married like he said. The second part, the revenge and subtle manipulations, are my favorite, because unfortunately for Carey, there isn't anything more dangerous than an Actress scorned, and it's so funny to watch Ingrid put the screws to her confused lover. She's brilliant in all the ways she turns Carey around, this way and that, as he tries to figure out what he did wrong. Some great quotes, too, and a gushing, beautiful score. A simple yet fun movie for couples to curl up and watch together.

What Director Stanley Donen uses excellently here are two gorgeous, sophisticated stars that fit like a glove. He also creates a deliciously elegant atmosphere with colorful, chic sets and stunning Dior gowns that comprise a feast for the eyes. "Indiscreet "will transport you to another lost, pleasant, and civilized time and place.
