Amazon.com All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas

THIS IS A COLLECTOR SET--NOT FOR THE AVG PERSON!! September 19, 2005 L. Marie (Seminole, FL United States) 27 out of 37 found this review helpful
The reason this set is called a collector set is because it is just that.. As the description says.. these are the FIRST films Disney put on DVD.. they are in the original format of their time for the purpose of collecting.. for people interested in seeing how the movies evolved.. for having a piece of Disney history. As for price.. it probably costs Disney way more to produce a "LIMITED EDITION" for those few special people interested in such a collection than it takes to produce these for the masses..
The set is not for the average consumer.. it is excellent for what it represents. Disney's first DVD releases .. just the way they were.. for the collector .. and only a limited few available.
This is a Treasure January 8, 2000 Daniel K. Billing (Tampa, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Disney Animation is so beautiful on DVD. The Pinnochio animation looks three dimensional. We bought these for our daughter, but my wife and I sit and watch them by ourselves. Highly recommended for the kid in all of us!
What more can anyone want? January 11, 2000 Branko Vekic (Sarajevo Bosnia and Herzegowina) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I know that some people would expect special features galore on these DVDs, but aren't the movies what really counts? And for the movies, I'm very grateful that they are on DVD at last. The picture and sound quality are excellent and I really don't need anything more. These are some of the best animated movies in history and the only better way to own them is to have your own cinema theather and 35mm prints - next to impossible for mayority of us. So, buy them and enjoy them while you can!
Yooo Haw December 30, 2002 Mabuse (Huerth, Germany) What is all this rumor about? This is the classic anthology. I understand that some people are really disappointed by the choice of movies - BUT it is very nice. There are only a few of bouns features, which are not necessary to mention BUT it offers some movies which are just not available today. Therefore, my kids and me really like this collection. The picture quality is excellent and the sound quality according to the source - more than 50 year old movies. I don't think that the price is a bargain - not at all. I bought it for about 100$ which makes it somehow a bargain. If the price would not be this high, I would fully recommend this collection to everyone interested in Disney movies. Currently I can only say - buy movies at better price / quality relations than this.
A real steal March 22, 2003 ... For that price you get several great movies. When we first bought the set, our son was not old enough to enjoy many of the movies. However, when we went on the Disney Cruise he discovered Hercules and he was so excited to see that he had it when we got home. And Mulan is also a great movie - our son loves Mushu. ...
