Amazon.com What if you could stop your heart to simulate a temporary death, and then be revived so you could describe your near-death experience to others? The mysteries of life--and the afterlife--compel five medical students (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt) to experiment with their own mortality, and what they discover has unsettling psychological implications. That's the intriguing premise of this neo-Gothic horror thriller, directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman & Robin) with his typical indulgence of vibrant colors and hyperactive, hallucinogenic style. The movie borders on silliness at times, and the near-death recollection of memories results in some repetitious scenes, but the dynamic young cast takes it all quite seriously, which is what keeps this gaudy thriller on the edge. The fascinating premise could have been made into a better film, but Schumacher's mainstream excess doesn't stop Flatliners from being slick, occasionally even provocative entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

An unquestionable masterpiece June 11, 1999 Anton Yakovlev (yakovlev@wpi.edu) (Worcester, MA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Flatliners is a remarkably audacious, wildly original exploration of one of the taboo topics of science and religion. Like Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, this film cannot be considered an all-time classic due to a highly opinionated viewpoint that may deeply offend some viewers. However, as far as direction, acting and suspense are concerned, few films rival Flatliners in its all-around splendor. Underneath a deceptively linear and seemingly simplistic script, there is much symbolism and underlying subtlety to be found in Schumacher's brilliant vision. Unlike the roller-coaster scenes of The Lost Boys that never materialize to be anything more than a misplaced piece of high-style imagery, the eerie, sometimes sacrilegious images that are thrown into the plot of Flatliners in a seemingly random fashion (the statues observed by the main character in the beginning, the merciless display of surgical operations) serve their purpose in implying the motivations and internal conflicts of the characters. Charged with alternatingly surprising and desperately predictable scenes, Flatliners is an exciting experience that will either frighten you or fascinate you but definitely will not leave anyone indifferent.
Dreamlike, Spooky, Eeerie and all together Spectacular May 28, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When the moon is high, and an unsettling breeze creeps through the alley behind my house, I sit dazed, my head floating as if in a dream as I lay watching FLATLINERS, one of my all-time favorite movies. It's a very mesmorising movie to watch. From it's creepy soundtrack, to the unusual way it is filmed. Definately a leader in it's genre. Other films I recommend are THE CROW, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (The Original), FRIGHT NIGHT, and THE LOST BOYS.
Scary, Original, Fascinating. September 11, 2005 R. Christenson (Pine, CO USA) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Flatliners is a horrific exploration of after-death experiences, directed with taut suspense by Joel Schumacher (The Client, Batman Forever, The Lost Boys). It's about five medical students led by Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys) carelessly experimenting with death.
Each wants a turn as one at a time they bring each other to the brink with their medical know-how, reviving the volunteer within seconds - at first, then daring each other to go for longer periods of minutes. After Sutherland's experience he finds a child from his past haunting him, but hides his hallucinations from the others. William Baldwin (Backdraft) goes next, and after his experience he sees reflections of his sins - selfish promiscuity, primarily - everywhere around him. Kevin Bacon (The River Wild, White Water Summer, A Stir Of Echoes) is next, before the results of the first two are revealed, then Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Conspiracy Theory), who insists on her turn in spite of the growing fears of the others. The fifth member of their group is Oliver Platt (Simon Birch, A Time To Kill).
The original idea, at the time the film was created, is fascinating as well as scary, and a precursor to such later efforts as White Noise. Unfortunately there's a great deal of foul language, considerable violence, and unnecessary sex with partial nudity (particularly in illustration of Baldwin's case). I say "unfortunately" because otherwise I'd like to show the film to everyone, the idea is so good, and effectively delivers a good message - "everything we do matters." But as it is, it's not suitable for children, and certainly offensive to many older viewers. If you're not bothered by the very R-ratedness, or will dare to watch in spite of it, I recommend the movie whole-heartedly.
Excellent direction and good acting October 12, 1999 D. Jenkins (Norfolk, Va. United States) I agree with the reviewer who commented at lenth on the scenes with Julia Roberts and her imagined reunion with her father. The period setting of her childhood was done perfectly, and when she returned and was climbing the stairs, her reaction at seeing the toy she thought had caused her father to fall was believable and touching. I thought the camera work circling her and her father during that reconciliation was so very effective, and Julia, being the great cryer that she is, along with that music, made the scene very moving. Excellent directing, good acting by everyone, especially Roberts, Bacon and Sutherland make it a movie that saves itself from it's farfetched premise and gives us some good entertainment.
