Amazon.com In this fast-paced, sci-fi/horror shoot-'em-up based on the Dark Horse comic book, Jamie Lee Curtis plays the navigator of an ocean-going tug. When a typhoon cripples their boat, the crew sails into the eye of the storm, where they discover a high-tech Russian communications and research vessel adrift. Only one Russian crewmember is still alive, raving about "intelligent lightning." They soon discover that an alien life form has taken over the ship's computers and is churning out biomechanical warriors. With their own boat destroyed, the crew must battle the creature as the ship reenters the storm. If the basic story and characters all sound familiar, it may not surprise you that producer Gale Anne Hurd's other films include The Terminator and Aliens. This movie and its derivative screenplay aren't nearly as good as those were, and director John Bruno (who won an Oscar for best visual effects for The Abyss) seems more skilled at action choreography and special effects than character and story. Curtis plays another variation on her "scream queen" persona, while Donald Sutherland gives a deliciously hammy performance as the tug captain (in his words, "the dominant life form") who smells salvage money if he can claim the Russian ship for his own. For all the picture's flaws, the effects are good (and gory) and it moves at top speed for a brisk 100 minutes. A trivia factoid: at one point on this troubled production, film footage was seized at the airport because the shipping box was prominently marked with the film's title! --Geof Miller

Cybernetics has never looked tastier... November 25, 2003 Schtinky (California) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A team of Russian cosmonauts encounter a strange, malevolent electrical being in space just before transmitting data down to a research vessel, the Vladislav Volkov in the South Pacific, and inadvertently wind out transmitting the being. In the meantime, the tugboat Sea Star is struggling with a large cargo in tow and gets caught in Typhoon Leiah, with some spectacular special effects on the storm in this scene. After loosing the cargo they must head for the eye of the storm in order to repair their boat, and meet up with the abandoned and derelict Russian research vessel. The captain claims the vessel as salvage and sets alight the crew's dreams of big money in the salvage fees. When they power up the Russian ship in order to bring her in, they unwittingly release the electrical being, starting up all the monstrosities it had already managed to create before being shut down by the remaining survivor of the Russian crew. The visuals are superb on the cybernetic creations, gory and disgusting; and the suspense as the survivors struggle to best the living, intelligent being is palatable and thick. Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Sutherland, and William Baldwin give excellent performances, and the supporting cast as well. Derelict ship, creepy monster, lots of action, sexy heroine...and lots of blood and guts give this tasty morsel five stars on my list. Enjoy!
MAYBE NOT THE GREATEST - BUT WELL WORTH WATCHING May 12, 2005 M. Hartmann (Milan, Michigan United States) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Well a movie to me is entertainment - and this movie does fall in that catagory. I like Sci-Fi and Baldwin was added to the picture.
This is the third time I have watched it and have still enjoyed it - Just think there is always someone smarter than you out there. Weird life form.
Generally liked the characters - especially our bomb expert.
I have no problem following the theory that there has to be a total anihilation of this life form. The struggle to do so is still a tribute to man's triumph over his fears of the unknown.
Then we have man's ingenuity against machine's capabilities. And a definite scenerio of how man's greed is his own destruction. Oh yes, a tribute to man's compassion and partnership where it counts.
Acting?, well that is in the eye of the beholder. Yup! I will probably break down and watch it again sometime.
Have fun reading the reviews - it is a treat to see what others think. Judge for yourself.
Not bad - Recommended
Terminator on the sea March 19, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This late nineties sci-fi movie was on of my favorite sci-fi movie released in 1999 in the closing year of the 20th century. This year was the eight anniversary of the movie since it was first release. Due to high terminator 2 like violence, occasional explosions and other thematic elements gory and disturbing images, and occasionally cursing and scary situation this movie might not be appropriate or maybe questionable for kids under the age of 17 depending on what there parent's or guardians consider appropriate for there ages. In the movie a Russian space ships is attacked by an alien life form that kills everybody on the space ship then transports it's self on the ship below monitor the space ship above where every body that does not abandon the ship except for one Russian women . A week later a crew from a sinking vessel comes aboard the ship. They find a Russian women on board scared to death she tells them about a creature that occupies the ship and keeping the ships powered turned off is the only way other than destroying it to keep the alien robotic life form subdued and under control. They find out two late the truth and epic struggle of enormous portion has began. Can they defeat this high tech terror from space and his smaller robot minions find out in the dramatic thrilling conclusion.
Good fun, big effects September 23, 1999 J. C Sallows (Madison, WI USA) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Yeah, we've seen all this before in different incarnations. The stranded boat thing has just about been done to death, particularly with "Deep Rising" just nudging its release. But you have to admit, it's pretty cool! Gory cyborgs that mutilate and "Borgify" the crew one by one, cool hurricane effects, and Joanna Pacula and Jamie Lee getting cold and wet throughout! How can you go wrong with that formula? John Bruno's directorial debut is an exciting, dark thrill ride. The CG work is awesome, which compliments the practical robots nicely. Donald Sutherland (although speaking with a very weak Scottish accent) never fails to bring a cold creepiness to such films (see Puppet Masters, Invasion of the Body Snatchers [1979]). The special features are cool too. Probably a 20 minute Documentary, 5 minute featurette (mostly footage from the documentary), and some deleted scenes. Only John Bruno is listed for the commentary, but in fact 2 of the lesser role actors and the composer are also present. This is a good movie and a good example of the possabilities of DVD.
Infected by Virus December 3, 1999 David Lee Mirenic (Crystal Lake, Illinois) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Virus is an engaging story told with apmosphere and suspense. Everyone did an excellent job from the acting department especially Donald Sotherland and Jamie Lee Curtis...they complemented each other like food to a great glass of wine. The editing was supurb as was the unfolding of the storyline. Of course let's not forget about the state of the art special effects (Thank you for not using morphing!) and the sound is spectaular thanks to both DTS and DolbyDigital 5.1 systems. The widescreen print is a nice ratio and is presented with sharp and rich colors. If you're into claustorphobic movies like 'Alien', 'The Fog' and 'John Carpenter's The Thing' you won't be dissipointed by this masterpiece. Crank the SurroundSound for this baby...you're going for a ride!
